Interpretive Themes

Interpretation is an art…the true interpreter…goes beyond the apparent to the real, beyond a part to a whole, beyond a truth to a more important truth…Freeman Tilden

What are these more important truths about Shoal Creek? For the interpreter, the first challenge is to identify the essential themes that will frame these truths. The human mind best retains information that is organized, and themes are simply one way of ordering loose pieces of information. For Shoal Creek I have identified three themes that speak to me:

  1. Myths and Mangled Memories
  2. The Splice of Austin
  3. The Way West

The pages that follow will develop each of these themes and identify stories that embody them. Of course there can be different themes than the ones I have developed. Each interpreter has a unique approach, and, as Tilden said, interpretation is an art. Enjoy.

  1. This is great stuff! Thanks for your leadership in drawing attention to its potential as a recreational mecca and eco-friendly transportation gateway to the urban core of Austin.
